Eat Your Art Out 9: Calvin and the Coconuts

Yo Dudes!
Earlier this year I was asked to contribute to the latest Eat Your Art Out fundraiser for the Angel City Derby crew, and I was glad I actually got a chance to contribute again. Last one I contributed to was in 2011. Unfortunately, I had to miss out on attending this year’s event, but I’m sure it was off the chain. Thanks to Jane Dope and the EYAO crew for having me! This piece is 9X12, acrylic on board. I’ve heard it’s already found a new home!

It was based on the following sketch from an old 2009 Weekend Sketch.

These old sketch pages have been a constant source of ideas when I’m running on blank (especially for all the new Instagram illustrations I’ve been doing)

Anyway, I should have a new illustration for the world this week!

Eat Your Art Out 4: Rikky’s Bitch

Hey all!

It’s been a minute since I’ve posted anything. I’ve been working a lot, unfortunately I’m unable to show you 95% of it..
This here’s a little piece I contributed to this year’s Eat Your Art Out group show a Meltdown comics. It took place a couple weeks ago and featured astounding art from over 60 different artists. Twas quite an event…
It’s acrylic paint on illustration board, and it’s called “Rikky’s Bitch”

Big Daddy

This was a commissioned painting I did last month. The client wanted something in the way of an Ed “Big Daddy” Roth illustration. This is what I cooked up. Acrylic on illustration board. click on the image below for a slightly larger version (sorry, lo-res photo)

I.H.P. no.108- Filth Flarn Filth

Well, I was hoping to post this last friday, but as I was nearly done typing
out this elaborate, epic blog, my page refreshed and I lost everything. I should’ve
known better. Anyway, I’ll try to do a better job of posting this on
blogger or livejournal as well as on myspace. A lot of people complain
that I post on myspace…
hmm… It’s been a while since I last posted. Frankly, the more time passes
(between blogs)the less I feel like posting. Shit, I think the last time
was before summer kicked off.
I’d write about my summer, but there was far too much going on.
From the gazillion freelance projects I took on, to my California trip,
Uberjam, Wizard World and after party.. and so on. At this point I
really can’t think of everything that happened…I do have a bunch of new artwork. Most of what I’ve been working
on you will probably won’t see any time soon. But It’ll be worth the wait.

I’ve noticed the blog has been getting quite a few hits although
the updates have been lacking. Awresome!

I’ve been feeling a little burnt again. I’m not
salty. Just a little tired. Honestly,
I’m really excited about what I’ve been working
on. Next year is what’s up.

Trying not to push it too much, but I gotta make up for
the meager output of the last few years.
So, on to the art.
A little theme music, please?

I’ll start with some commissions done at Wizard World.
I was set up with Mike Huddleston, Mike Bianco, and
Jim Mahfood. My crew is better than yours.

Before the convention, I started working on drawings to sell

The afterparties we held this year (Friday at Darkroom,
Saturday at The Black Beetle) were off the chain. This
thing gets bigger every year. Thanks to everybody who came
through to kick off the dance party.

Don’t want to get into it just yet, but I just wanted to
show off designs from a couple original
concepts I’m working on…

Sheila, Scott, Johnny, Mr. Cruz and Carl

Davey Wurst and Afro-Brites
I’ll keep you posted as news develops
(plus a few additional weeks/months/years)
AAAnd lastly, I’m sure you all remember

…Teen Heaven?
The first chapter will be done soon (I swear!)
Rather than putting out a 168 page black and white graphic novel,
I will be serializing it (about quarterly) over the next couple years.
It will be in full color. And as it stands, free.
Online. Unless somebody offers a deal I can’t refuse.
I’m dying to get this story done and out. I jut couldn’t deal with rushing
this out just to meet a deadline (and for little to no cash)
When I started working on it in 04, I found myself having to cut

much of the story in order to meet the deadline/page count.
I’ve had more ideas since then, so a limitless page count is exactly
what I need at this point….

IHP 106- Fight Series no. 6: Hold The Mayo

Whattuppers? Sorry for the slow updates, workin my grind as usual.
In addition to the coloring/comic/flyer/etc work, I took part in a group art
show last weekend called “Get Fit” at the south side 32nd & Urban
gallery. There was a great turnout, thanks to all who rolled through.
If you couldn’t make it to the opening, no worries. The show’s open until
May 23rd.
Here’s the piece I contributed, titled “Fight Series No. 6: Hold The
Mayo”. It was inspired by Olivia Newton-John (though that isn’t her in
the painting…)

Acrylic on illustration board, 20″ x 32″
It’s selling for $560.00. If you’d like to buy it, please contact the fine

That was a helluva night.

The day before I left for NY, I was called by Mad mag to provide the art
for a two page article called ” Mad’s Teacher Translation Guide”. It’s
all done (was up past 5:30 am last night finishing it) and I’ll post the
issue and date as soon as I know.
Since I haven’t posted much art lately, I figured I’d post sketches from
the last Mad article I did, from the Feb. 07 issue.

If you want to see the final art, cop that ish from your local bookstore…

One Hundredth Post- Art from 32nd & Urban, 12/16/07

Yayer!

Live art at the 32nd and Urban Gallery opening
was off the hook. Friday the 15th had Intel on
the decks and Revise CMW, Joey D and Kepha
rocked the wall space live…pics of their art

The night then took us to Tuman’s where Haiku
shared the product of his baking skills, then
to the Continental, which fucked my head up
ten times over…

The next day (Saturday the 16th) I painted alongside
Blutt and Esho on the wall across from the pieces above.
Free beer, chips n’ guac, and brownies. Tunes by DJ
Genghiswon. The Scumbags rolled through with full force..

Thanks to Once A Month and John Herndon for the dancefloor

Thanks to Mike and Erin for rockin it once again!
Wednesday Night Trimm at Danny’s is always a good time.
Peace to the birthday girls in the house!
Thanks to Carl Wilson for being Carl Wilson.

Thanks to Mike  for the board…

The second piece of the night. I painted til the end…

Deetells….

I’ll most likely edit this post with an update once I get more photos.
It’s strange looking at these live art paintings under normal light.
Most spots are dark with colored lights, so it alters the colors you
work with.

Don’t have any more Live art shows booked until late December,
though I’m sure one or two will come up between now and then. I’ll
keep you posted.
plus you could always check my profile for dates, etc..

In other news, www.40ozcomics.com , Jim Mahfood’s website, has
finally been updated. I know Jim’s been working on getting this up
since last year, and after a few setbacks it’s good to go. I did the
coloring for all his webpage images (and I colored a few illustrations
here and there). Check it out, leave Jim some love and let me know
what you think! And be sure to give props to Jen for her web
finesse!

fair, eh?

Last minute live art from Sub-T last weds…

So, last Wednesday I was on Milwaukee ave. doing my
pre- Thanksgiving laundry when I got a call from
Trimm. He was at Subterranean (literally right down the street)
and his live artists both backed out at the last minute. I dried
my gear, ran home, washed my ass, loaded my shit and rocked
some impromptu art. I had a good night widdit.
Pickel, Maker and Trimm played the bomb tracks.
Folks in the house showed love, bought me beer…

I wasn’t really prepared, so rather than try some new shit and fuck
up, I painted my Chameleon Girl character.

2′ X 4′ , acrylic..

Close up.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with it. I’m gonna finish it up at home, try
to move it later. The mask around her face was supposed to be more
of a light blue. And that’s what it looked like under the yellow lights.
I’ll have to redo it.

Here’s some sketches. I don’t think I’ve posted them yet. They’re a
little old. Pretty much all the drawing I’m doing these days is for
some fucking production or another. Nothing I’d really care to show
off.

In other news, I’ve actually been motivated to work again. For the
past year or so (or at least since I finished Project: Romantic) I’ve
found myself dragging my heels to get anything done. That’s why I
haven’t been updating this blog as much as I used to and why I don’t
have much in print this year. After a couple years of graphic
novels/mini series, a break up, a move, a couple deaths combined
with going out everynight to get away from it all, I’ve been feeling
pretty burnt. Slowly but surely I’m getting back in the game. I’m
trying to keep from diving headfirst into late worknights for fear that
it would immediately send me running back into escapist behavior.

That’s also the reason why I’ve been slow (or in many
cases never) responding to P.Ms and e-mails. My brain
tends to take vacations I don’t authorize. Especially you,
Munoz. I’ve been keeping up on the Japan thing, and I’ll get
back to you soon…. Sorry bout that, homey!

I just gotta say, I’m thankful for all the friends I’ve made over the
past year who’ve more than helped me maintain a sense of
balance. I can’t imagine who or where I’d be if not for youse.
for reals.
And to all the mofos I’ve known since like forever, and Sara, thanks
for having my back the whole time.

and that’s my post thanksgiving aside. Didn’t really intend on it.

I know I say this all the time, but I’ve got some shit brewin that’ll
knock your socks clean-the-fuck off. Yash! And it’s all for me!!!
no publishers or clients. Just for me! (and you, of course)
oooooooohh!!!
